Teaching
With Charlotte Tomlinson
- Develop excellent piano technique
- Enjoy learning, playing piano, making music and performing
- Communicate all that you are through the music and the instrument
- Use your whole body (not just your hands or arms) efficiently and effectively to create rich, powerful sounds with the minimum of effort
- Relish the process of working in fine detail on a piece of music to meet its technical and interpretive demands
- Become a first-class performer
- Reach international performance standards (if that is what you want!)
- Overcome playing problems such as RSI and tendonitis (I am a registered practitioner for the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine).
How I work
Teaching piano is really about teaching people...
Everyone is different, and therefore need lessons that are tailored to their personal goals, learning style, personality, strengths and weaknesses. And that’s what makes it interesting for me too.
I enjoy teaching people who are open-minded and willing to be surprised, people who recognize that their greatest obstacles are self-imposed and can be transcended with imagination and perseverance. Beginners and advanced students are equally welcome in this respect.
I believe in a ‘whole person’ approach that means helping you:
- integrate body, mind and emotions as a learner, pianist and performer
- let go of unnecessary physical tension, mental and emotional habits that can get in the way of learning and playing at your best
- become an adventurous and successful learner through highly creative approaches
- light up, grow and advance in your piano playing and seeing how this can positively affect other parts of your life as well.

My background
After my music degree at York University, I gained a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and also studied at Banff Centre of Fine Arts, Canada. Since then, I have been indulging my two passions – Teaching and Performing:
Teaching
I like to take a ‘whole
person’ approach to teaching and draw upon a broad range of
training - from the teaching and learning methods of international
music conservatoires and extensive experience of professional music
making, to Yoga, Feldenkrais, Hakomi, the Bates Method, Bodywork
training and Transpersonal Psychology.
I have taught piano, lectured in Performance, and done vocal coaching
at a range of institutions, including the Purcell
School, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,
the University
of Hong Kong, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
I currently teach piano to music undergraduates at Oxford
University, and often work with students of Grade 8/Diploma
level and beyond. However, more important than the level of skill is
the student’s open mind, and strong determination.
Sir Simon Rattle described my
chamber music course as “stimulating and visionary”
when I founded and for 8 years directed Chamber Music International, an
annual summer course coaching chamber ensembles of advanced, talented
young musicians many of whom have gone on to successful performing
careers.
Performing
I have an international profile as a pianist and chamber musician, and
have given duo recitals in Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, the Gulf States
as well as throughout the UK and across Europe. My trio, the Hong Kong
piano trio, was well established in South East Asia.
I have worked as an accompanist for all the London music colleges and
has also been an official accompanist for the BBC
Young Musician of the Year. My work has been broadcast on the
BBC, Dutch National Radio and RTHK (Hong Kong). Recital partners have
included amongst others Adrian Thompson, Neil
Jenkins, Andrej Bielow, Karen Leishman of
the Alberni Quartet, Pal Banda of the Allegri Quartet,
members of the New London Chamber Ensemble and
the Duke
Quartet.
“…her playing is always wide ranging, fresh and
imaginative”
John Lill
“Pianist Charlotte Tomlinson was remarkably sensitive
… her playing throughout made a significant contribution to
the success of the evening.”
