I have played piano for BBC Young Musician of the Year, and have broadcast for BBC Radio 3, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and NPO Klassiek, along with many years of working for all the London music colleges. My experience as a professional pianist has given me a deep understanding of the inevitable stresses that all performers encounter.
As a piano teacher, I have given piano masterclasses and one-to-one lessons for many organisations and festivals, including Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong APA, Purcell School and Oxford International Piano Festival. I have also taught on Chetham’s International Piano Summer School and regularly teach on the Jackdaws and Finchcocks piano weekends.
I teach professional pianists, piano teachers, alumni from conservatoires, university students at Oxford and advanced amateurs.
Chamber Music International (CMI) was a summer course that I founded and directed for high level chamber ensembles and composers. It ran for 8 years, with internationally renowned performers and coaches on the faculty and Sir Simon Rattle as its patron. It was this experience that was in part behind the subsequent creation of Oxford Piano Weekends.
Over many years of working with many types of musicians, it became apparent to me that people often needed a particular type of performance coaching. I use a holistic approach, including work on performance anxiety, and rehab from tension, muscle strain and emotional crisis. A brush with tendonitis as a student led to a fascination in the connections between the mind, body and emotions and I spent over twenty years exploring and taking trainings in different forms of body and mind therapies, developing them for my work with people.
I have worked with British Association of Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) and built a successful track record of moving musicians through Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and tendonitis. My deep dive into personal development over many years has taught me ways to help people strengthen and develop their own understanding and intuition towards themselves.
Talks and Masterclasses
These have taken me around the world, from specialist music schools such as The Yehudi Menuhin School to conservatoires such as Sydney Conservatorium and Norwegian Music Academy. I have also worked at the Yale Summer School of Music, USA (Norfolk Chamber Music Festival) the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival (New York), at the Verbier Academy and Festival (Switzerland) and for orchestras such as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra among others.
The Conference of European Music Schools and General Assembly of the World Federation of International Music Competitions invited me to be a Keynote Speaker, and I have also presented at the annual ABRSM Teachers Conference and the Leeds International Piano Competition.
Beyond Stage Fright is a fantastic series! Each video offers such valuable insights and advice that I am sitting with pen and paper, making notes as I go along.
Beyond Stage Fright Interview Series was a project in which I interviewed 43 top international musicians on film about how they manage performance stress. My work in the media as a radio presenter for RTHK was invaluable experience for this. I have also developed and presented two online video courses: Inspired Performance and Piano Freedom
